    no offence but this video really annoys me, you bother to go into plate tectonics giving a really scientific feel to your world but them completely missundertand how that works. rivirs never fork out towards the sea other than in deltas so it feels stupid to think about plate tectknics if you dont even consider basic rules of nature.

    • @TheFantasyForge
      @TheFantasyForge День назад

      Totally understand! I'm 100% not a scientist, this video was more of an attempt at thinking about some of the finer details rather than just "throwing some noodles on a paper and outlining" like a lot of people do. But I've learned a lot more, done more research, and finishing up a "part 2" of this video where I've altered more of the map, including the rivers and plate tectonics. I'm sure it's still not perfect still, but I'm learning and that was the whole reason I made this in the first place :D Thanks for the comment!

    Its still super useful considering that dms dont force you to make perception checks for stuff you can obviously see. "Make a perception check to see if you can notice that this room is chock full of zombies waiting for any idiot to walk in rhe room with a blindfold on"

    STOP WRITING STORIES The story of a D&D session or campaign should be a POST HOC explanation of what happened Let your players do what they want and use the tables in the back of the book to roll with the punches If you dont have tables in the back of your books for procedural generation then you're playing a non-game, get something else

    • @TheFantasyForge
      @TheFantasyForge 2 дня назад

      Appreciate the comment! Feel free to play how you want! I change my "story" based on my characters interactions after every session, but I always have a "beat/outline" to follow for the following session even if it's different from the outline for the previous session. I don't go into a campaign knowing exactly what will happen, but I do have a plan that I update weekly and follow a rhythm as I change it. If that's not for you, then that's okay! Luckily you aren't playing at my table, but my players love it so much that we've been playing for almost 5 years and going strong. Every table is different. Hope that makes sense!

  • @TheStickDynasty

    When I went about making my current homebrew world one of the foundational ideas I built from was that the gods were real living things. Each Divine is a massive beastial thing that lives somewhere in the world. They each have their own personality and desire. Each of my player characters worships a unique Divine that defines their heritage and alignment. Many cultures in my world have a Divine that they revolve around. For example the Human Emperor is a bull-like Divine and the Goblins rally around this Divine that is a massive sentient cloud of blood. Since the Divine are physically in the world they can, and have, been killed. Usually this happens at the hands of other Divine, but there are other ways to kill them as well. So for all those that wish to embrace gods I say do it! Let the pantheon you create define the cultures of your gameworld and the story that plays out in it.

    The absolute FIRST thing you need to understand is how plate tectonics work in your world. Are they moving towards, or away from each other. This tells you how/why there are mountains. Mountain ranges are caused by plates smashing together, like the Alps, Himalayas, Rockies etc. Once you know where the mountains are, what land is high and low, then you can make rivers. Rivers flow from high to low. Lakes are created when the water can't reach the ocean because of flattening land or obstacles. What latitude are things? This affects what grows there (pines vs deciduous trees etc), lush vs desert... Once you have rivers you can make cities. Almost every city in the real world needs fresh water and trade. So, cities are almost always on rivers, either deltas, or on rivers inland. That's the boring bit. Once you know this, the world will be believable, now for the story. What is the purpose of a city/town? A place where farmers bring their goods for distribution, buy feed, eat and drink, socialise, trade livestock, buy tools or weapons from a blacksmith etc. Maybe is an administrative centre for collecting taxes, dispensing justice etc. Maybe there is an important source of raw materials or a mine nearby. It must have a purpose. In a fantasy story it may be a place of worship, pilgrimage, learning and sorcery. Ruins and other places may be military forts, castles, manor houses etc. Bottomline is there must be a reason for things. Just dumping random shit on a map never works.

    This sounds appealing, but from past attempts I find that ttrpgs are inherently at odds with the idea of the pcs as "main characters." A nasty crit makes things go different REALLY fast, and a hesitation to kill someones pc leads to a lot of *fudge* and a lot of cheesing. As well as that I find it massively complicates prep, leading to burnout, especially if they do something you didnt account for that fundamentally alters how the plot has to play out.

    • @TheFantasyForge
      @TheFantasyForge 5 дней назад

      At least for me, the outline should change, otherwise you aren't playing a game. If a PC dies, well that alters the story, and the outline, and your plans change. Just because there's a chance of dying doesn't mean you aren't a main character. At least I think so! In a world of magic, you can choose to let them die, or offer another way. But that's just me! Thanks for the comment!

    Because 5e has high magic completely baked into the rules, and no other systems I looked at were any closer of a match to what I wanted to run, I ended up hombrewing... everything. • @TheFantasyForge

      For sure, if that's how you'd rather play it then heck yeah! I definitely like starting with something actually happening similar to Skyrim. Also it doesn't have to be something big and action packed. "The One Ring has been discovered" also works too. But that's just my style

    The US military designed MREs to be eaten at a rate of three per day (total of roughly 3600 calories) and this is expected to sustain a servicemember in active operations doing military things all day. This is a result of over a century of research into military nutrition, so it's probably a good baseline, keeping in mind that today's American soldiers are a lot beefier (so have a higher BMR) that knights of old. The Romans had daily rations of white flour (approx. 3500 calories/kg) and olive oil (approx. 8400 calories/kg), so if you're targeting 2lbs you can use some proportion of these as your main calorie source (IIRC the Legionaires were supposed to cook it themselves, mostly as flatbread or some kind of porridge) maybe in the form of bread, and fill the rest with protein and sugar. A 1kg loaf of bread does sound about right in terms of raw energy, but unless it's fresh that's gonna be a chore to eat if you have literally nothing to go with it. That cooking bit bears mentioning, because unless you're force marching literally all day, it's much easier and a lot more pleasant to cook something. I have a k. und k. regulation military cookbook on my shelf and the mainstays it relies on include a lot of things like soups and stews cooked in a cauldron, which makes meat (even dried meat) go a lot further and adds some flavour, and makes even normally inedible things edible. If you don't want to literally just eat trail mix, your rations could include dried vegetables, legumes and such that you can make into a soup, and perhaps thicken it with flour or hardtack or make dumplings. Also when foraging it's a lot easier to find things that can be thrown in a soup and eaten than things that are immediately edible (e.g. mushrooms).

    I had my characters rescue a god fallen to the earth in a cosmic event. Extremely compelling right until they actually met her. Since then I've felt like all I can do is back peddle because, no surprise, she didn't arrive with all her powers and even has forgotten most of what happened to her. This is all very sixth element I know....but the problem now is she's either unbelievably weak and no longer worth 'believing in' or she's at risk for taking the spotlight from the players. It's a lot to work around and my players generally act more interested in other story elements. I liked having them rescue her, but I should've just had her leave right away. Also...roleplaying a god in a compelling way? It's a lot of work...

    I see it this way: gods should rarely interact directly with the world in a perceptible way, especially if they're lesser deities. However, they should interact with it all the time in invisible ways. After all, they embody certain natural phenomena and concepts that play essential roles. When they show up directly, it should be for a significant plot point that necessitates their intervention. Besides that, I can conceive of occasions where a god communicating with one of his or her followers might be a thing under specific circumstances, primarily if those followers are meant to go on a mission for their god, but rarely in person. Instead, they should usually communicate through dreams, visions, signs, and maybe prophets.

    • @TheFantasyForge
      @TheFantasyForge 6 дней назад

      this is how I see it too! It's just more fun and interesting that way (for me) and just make it feel like they are actually gods. I mean, I don't sit around staring at ants and talking to them all day, so why would a god do that with us?

    4:00 Displacer kitten Acquired. I find god characters more interesting if they do one of two things: 1- Their a hyper-specific god, or have some severe limitation to keep them from becoming a deus ex machina. Think, "God of Wine" or "Goddess of the Rainbow" - The title alone implies severe limitation which doesn't let them become a cure-all, while also giving the opportunity to let them use their limiting powers in a creative way to solve whatever problems they can. (Think Dionysus from the Hades serries) 2- They are only a god in name, myth, and legend- but are never shown or interacted with. Bonus points if your players even question if this god is 'real' in the setting, or if their followers are simply crazy. Otherwise (In my experience, at least) they seem to be a boring deus ex machina that kind of invalidates the players existence in the story. why are the players needed if the god is just ridiculously powerful? (Unfortunately, I don't think "god-slayers" helps either issue)

    >realistic >fantasy Which one is it then? Realism is a spook and in my own story I am using a flipped upsidedown map of europe.

      Fantasy is the setting, but you can still make a world that's realistic in that setting. Realistic doesn't mean it needs to look like our world, it just needs to make sense! At least that's how I view it

      Phew, ok for once that is actually correct meaning of realism. I am very relieved.

    3:43 I think this was an inside joke between the GMs, who each were quoting "Avatar: The Last Airbender" opening. Aabria and Matt opened with "Water. Earth." before that in there campaigns.

      LMAO I do remember Matt doing that. Never saw Aabria do that. If that's true that's amazing lmao. That means the next Airbender is here...

    I find this video so interesting and well thought out, every minute you make a solid point, so that my ADHD just absolutely side tracks the train of thought with that new exciting information, and I have to rewind this video 4 minutes back every 5 minutes.

    A nice little tip for ground textures is to play around with rotation of the textures before putting them down. It makes the pattern blend into itself much better and makes the seams less noticeable.

    I’m here, I love d&d, but I am an author and I’m plotting a book, not a campaign

      I'm doing both! haha. The basic principles are there, this works for screenwriting and for books too! The book that this information comes from actually inspired/informed the script for Star Wars!
